RIT Box Score | Utica Box Score

Rochester, N.Y. – The Ithaca (8-7, 1-1 Empire 8) volleyball team dropped its conference opener to Rochester Institute of Technology (10-4, 2-0 Empire 8), 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon in the first of two Empire 8 Crossovers this season, though the Bombers bounced back and blanked Utica (1-15, 0-2 Empire 8), 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-11).

In the first set against RIT, Ithaca opened with a 3-1 lead but the Tigers would knot the match at 3-3 and 5-5 and run away with the lead. The host squad went on to outscore the Bombers 20-11 and take the first set, 25-16.

The second stanza opened in similar fashion as the first as it was tied on four occasions before the Bombers won five straight points to lead 11-6. Maintaining the advantage, Ithaca improved to lead 15-10 before RIT inched its way back to bring the game to a 19-19 stalemate.

The Tigers won the match on a 6-2 stretch to implement a 25-21 second-set victory.

The third and final set featured an early 8-3 RIT run before the Bombers made a run of their own to tie the match at 12. The teams rallied to keep the score close and Ithaca twice neglected the Tigers their match point, but following a timeout RIT notched its final point to take the third, 25-23.

Against Utica, Ithaca wasted little time as the Bombers claimed the first of three sets, 25-5, their largest single-set margin of victory this season.

Despite the Pioneers taking the first point, Ithaca outscored its opponent 13-1 before Utica recorded another point. With the 13-3 lead, the Bombers tallied six unanswered points and propelled through the remainder of the game on a 6-2 run to end the first of three.

The second set remained close through a 14-13 Ithaca edge, but the Bombers notched five back-to-back points to lead 19-13 on the serve of senior Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.).

Another 6-2 Ithaca spurt finalized the set at 25-15 before eight aces would highlight the final set to close out the day's action. Utica opened strong with a 3-0 run before Ithaca worked its way back to tie the game at 6-6.

As sophomore Carly Graham (West Genesee/Syracuse) recorded six aces, the Bombers pulled ahead 15-6. The match progressed and junior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) iced the match with an ace to conclude the third set, 25-11.

The Bombers are slated to take on Elmira in a 10 a.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 26 before facing Nazareth at 3 p.m.
