ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's soccer team took a first-half lead against visiting Cortland, but the Red Dragons rallied for a 2-1 win Tuesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. Ithaca sophomore forward
Steve Kinslow (West Essex/Fairfield, N.J.) scored his second goal of the season for the Bombers.
Kinslow's opening goal came in the ninth minute and was created by an excellent passing play. Senior midfielder
Bill Barrowman (Bethlehem Central/Glenmont) one-touched a pass down the right sideline for senior midfielder
Matt Baluzy (Roosevelt/Salt Point), and
Baluzy delivered a cross from near the end line to the center of the penalty area, where
Kinslow was unmarked and headed in a shot. It was
Baluzy's first assist of the year.
Six minutes later, senior midfielder
Jeff Geyer (Rham/Hebron, Conn.) forced a diving save from the Cortland goalkeeper, who tipped the shot around the left post. Another Ithaca chance in the second half came off a corner kick when junior back
Matt Anthony (Pine Bush/Middletown) headed over the crossbar from close range in the 63rd minute.
Sophmore forward
Colton Wigsten (Spencer-Van Etten/Spencer) provided an offensive spark in the second half. He ran onto a pass and chipped the goalkeeper, but the ball was tackled away before he could make the finishing touch. He also tested the goalkeeper with a hard 40-yard shot that was tipped over the crossbar.
Cortland tied the game in the first half, and scored the winning goal with five minutes remaining in the second half. Ithaca had won two straight games against Cortland in 2008 and 2009.
Ithaca will be back in action Saturday afternoon, when the Bombers host Rensselaer at 3 p.m. on Carp Wood Field.
