Brook's No-Hitter Keeps Bombers Alive In Empire 8 Playoffs

Alyssa Brook struck out a season-high nine batters

Alfred, N.Y. -- Senior Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) threw the program's first extra-inning no-hitter ever as the Bombers (27-13) eliminated Rochester Institute of Technology (17-21) from the Empire 8 Championship Tournament with a 2-0 win Friday afternoon. Ithaca will face either Alfred or St. John Fisher Saturday at 11 a.m.; the Saxons and Cardinals play a 4 p.m. game Friday with the loser facing Ithaca in an elimination game Saturday morning.

Brook allowed just four baserunners – all on walks – and retired 13 straight Tigers at one point. She walked the game's lead-off hitter and issued a two-out walk in the second then didn't let another runner reach until the bottom of the seventh. RIT's lead-off hitter walked, but was thrown out by senior catcher Katherine Wilson (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) trying to steal second. After another walk, Brook worked out of trouble by retiring the Tigers on a pair of ground outs.

The Bombers – who were held hitless through six innings themselves – took advantage of two of RIT's four errors to score a pair of eighth-inning runs. Junior third baseman Alison Greaney (John F. Kennedy/Iselin, N.J.) reached on an infield error to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by Wilson. Senior outfielder Alyssa Guzman (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) singled in the game's first run then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball hit by junior second baseman Kait Dolan (Victor/Farmington). Guzman scored when senior first baseman Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) reached on an infield error.

Brook retired the side in order in the bottom of the eight for her fourth shutout of the season and the seventh of her career. She raised her record to 10-7 and lowered her ERA to 1.18.

Ithaca's first two hits both came in the seventh. Guzman led off with a single and freshman outfielder Molly O'Donnell (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) added a one-out single. RIT got out of the jam by turning a line to the pitcher into a double play.
