ITHACA, N.Y.—The Ithaca softball team (11-7) had its seven-game winning streak snapped with a pair of losses to visiting Cortland (17-5) Wednesday. The 11th-ranked Red Dragons won game one 1-0 and took game two 6-2.
The Bombers were held to two hits in the opener and put just three runners on base. Ithaca's best scoring chance came in the fourth when freshman outfielder Molly O'Donnell (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) hit a two-out single and senior first baseman Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) reached on an error, but the Red Dragons escaped with an inning-ending strikeout.
Senior Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) allowed only four hits and fanned three.
In game two freshman outfielder Jennifer Biondi (Morris Knolls/Denville, N.J.) put the Bombers up 2-0 in the second with a two-run single. Her two-out hit brought in junior third baseman Alison Greaney (John F. Kennedy/Iselin, N.J.), who'd drawn a lead-off walk, and junior second baseman Kayla Critser (Herkimer/Herkimer), who reached on an error. Biondi finished with two of Ithaca's five hits.
The Bombers resume Empire 8 play this weekend, hosting doubleheaders with Alfred (Saturday) and Rochester Institute of Technology (Sunday).
