Cornell Sweeps Softball Doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y.--The Bombers (22-12) dropped a pair of games to visiting Cornell (30-11) Wednesday afternoon, falling 13-1 in the first game and 6-2 in the opener. Ithaca returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Elmira.

In the opener, the Bombers plated the first run of the game in the third. Senior Alyssa Guzman (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a groundout. Classmate Caitlin Ryan (Allent0wn/Clarksburg, N.J.) drove her in on a single to right center. Ryan went 3-for-3 in the opener

Senior Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) drew the game one start and threw a complete game. She struck out six Cornell batters.

In the second game, the Big Red scored the game's first six runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers got back-to-back singles from freshmen Jennifer Biondi (Morris Knolls/Denville, N.J.) and Becca Salant (Holliston/Holliston, Mass.) to open in the inning. After a groundout moved the runners up, freshman pinch-hitter Carianne D'Alessandro (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bound Brook, N.J.) scored Biondi on a grounder to short. Salant scored on an infield error.

Biondi had two of Ithaca's five hits in the second game.

Junior Brittany Lillie (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) pitched a complete game and struck out five batters.
