Alfred, N.Y. - The Ithaca men's lacrosse team (6-9, 4-3 Empire 8) defeated Alfred 13-1 Wednesday afternoon at Merrill Field. The Bombers held the Saxons to just one goal, the team's best defensive performance in a game since a 23-1 win at Keuka April 17, 2001.
Ithaca held a 6-0 lead before Alfred scored its lone goal, and the Bombers tacked on seven straight tallies after that. The Bombers outshot Alfred 45-19, won 14 of 17 faceoffs and forced 22 turnovers.
Bomber junior goalie David Gal (Loomis Chaffee/Amherst, Mass.) made nine saves and earned the win. Starting defenders senior Nick Powers (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, N.J.) and freshman Marc Roberts (Hendrick Hudson/Montrose) each forced one turnover, as did freshman reserve defenders Adam Wacenske (Gates-Chili/Rochester) and Kyle Sinclair (North Reading/North Reading, Mass.). Alfred's only goal came on a man-up opportunity.
Junior midfielder Mike Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) led the Bombers with three caused turnovers and sophomore middie Nick Munn (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) had a team-high six ground balls.
Sophomore attackman Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) led Ithaca's offense with four goals and an assist and sophomore attackman Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) had four points on three goals and an assist. Seven of Ithaca's 13 goals were assisted, nine different players had at least one point, and senior midfielder Nic Heckman (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) assisted on two goals. He also scored one.
Freshman attackman Chris Shearin (West Essex Regional/Essex Fells, N.J.) appeared in his first collegiate game and scored his first collegiate goal.
The Bombers remain in contention for an Empire 8 playoff berth and control their own destiny. They can make the playoffs by defeating Stevens in the regular-season finale Saturday at 1 p.m. on Upper Terrace Field.
