Geneva, N.Y. - The Ithaca women's tennis team concluded its regular season with its second straight win over a regionally-ranked opponent with a 5-4 victory at William Smith Wednesday afternoon. Ithaca (15-4) is ranked 23rd in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and William Smith is ranked 21st in the region.
Ithaca held a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches following an 8-4 win at first doubles by sisters freshman Cristina Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) and senior Melissa Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) and an 8-5 win at second doubles by seniors Devra Reiman (Columbia/Maplewood, N.J.) and Sarah Hollis (Greens Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.).
Cristina Nunez started the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win to give Ithaca its third point, but William Smith won the next two completed matches to tie the score 3-3 with three matches still out on court. Reiman added Ithaca's fourth point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at second singles and Melissa Nunez earned the clinching point at fifth singles in a 6-4, 6-3 win on her 21st birthday.
The Bombers will find out their site and opponent in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship when the bracket is announced May 10.
