New Paltz, N.Y. - The Ithaca women's tennis team (14-4) won all three doubles matches and went on to a 6-3 win over New Paltz (13-3) Monday night in a matchup of regionally-ranked teams. The Bombers are ranked 23rd in the Northeast Region and New Paltz is 18th in the Northeast according to the latest regional rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Bombers won all three doubles matches despite playing two doubles combinations that have not had much match experience this year. Freshman Cristina Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) and junior Melanie Cohen (Hatboro-Horsham/Ambler, Pa.) played just their second varsity match of the year and improved to 2-0 as a team with an 8-6 victory at first doubles. Seniors Devra Reiman (Columbia/Maplewood, N.J.) and Sarah Hollis (Greens Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.) won at second doubles and the freshman duo of Kelsey Harness (Allegan/Allegan, Mich.) and Laurel Salladay (Pinkerton/Hampstead, N.H.) won at third doubles to improve their record to 4-1 on the year.
Singles wins for Nunez, Reiman and Hollis sealed the victory.
Ithaca returns to action Wednesday at William Smith, the 21st-ranked team in the Northeast Region. That will conclude Ithaca's regular season. The Bombers will find out their first-round opponent and location for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship when it is announced May 10.
