ITHACA, N.Y.--Junior lefthander Andrew Wall (Newfield/Newfield) struck out a career-high eight batters to lead Ithaca (10-11) to a 10-2 win over Cazenovia (4-15) Tuesday at Freeman Field. The Bombers took advantage of six Wildcat errors to score five unearned runs in the win, their fourth in a row.
Wall's win was his second of the season. He allowed just four hits over his seven innings of work, and retired Cazenovia's first six hitters. The Wildcats plated solo runs in the third and seventh innings.
Up by three runs at 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bombers broke the game open with five runs over their final two innings at the plate. Junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) drove in two runs on a single to right in the seventh. In the eighth, freshman pinch hitter Andrew Turner (Randolph/Randolph, N.J.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, which was dropped by the Wildcats to allow Turner to reach first safely. Turner scored in the inning on a second Cazenovia miscue in the frame. Sophomore Mike Preite (Hopkinton/Hopkinton, Mass.) drove in a run on a groundout in the inning.
Wolf and classmate David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) both picked up two hits in the win. Ahonen scored a pair of runs.
Ithaca scored five runs over the first three innings. Ahonen drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the first. In the second, the Bombers scored on an outfield error and a groundball to shortstop off the bat of sophomore leadoff hitter Mike Rosenbaum (Fayetteville/Malius/Fayetteville).
The Bombers added two more runs in the third, with freshman Sean Weber (Columbia/East Schodack) hitting a sacrifice fly and freshman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) scoring Wolf on a triple to right.
Ithaca returns to action Thursday at New Paltz.
