Cortland, N.Y.--Despite twice tying the score with second-half goals, Ithaca (1-3) fell 13-8 to ninth-ranked Cortland (4-1) on Saturday. The Bombers got goals from five different players, including three from junior Ali DeCirce (Binghamton/Binghamton) and two from junior Katie Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls).
Trailing by two goals to open the second half, Ithaca got consecutive goals from senior Kylie McClure (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Michelle Avery (Brien McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) to tie the score at six goals apiece.
After a quick Red Dragon goal, the Bombers tied the score again, this time on Avery's third goal of the afternoon. Cortland struck back with three straight goals and, despite a late Ithaca goal from sophomore Nicole Borisenok (Watervliet/Albany Academy for Girls), went on to the five goal victory.
Borisenok, Hurley and freshman Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) all picked up assists in the game. Sophomore Siobhan Sullivan (Franklin/Franklin, Mass.) led Ithaca with three ground balls, with Avery and senior Katherine Bixby (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.).
Senior Courtney Dowell (Massapequa/Massapequa) started the game in goal. Freshman Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) relieved her and recorded seven saves.
The Bombers open Empire 8 play Friday at Rochester Institute of Technology.
