Clermont, Calif. -- The softball team (3-4) snapped a two-game losing streak by hammering Geneseo (2-3) 8-0 Tuesday morning in a game shortened to six innings. Junior Alison Greaney (John F. Kennedy/Iselin, N.J.) threw a complete-game one-hitter for the shutout.
Greaney allowed just three base runners and held the Blue Knights hitless through 4.1 innings. She struck out five batters. Geneseo never put more than one runner on in any inning and never advanced a runner as far as second base.
At the plate, Greaney drove in two runs and stole a base. She reached on a run-scoring field's choice in the fourth and singled in a run in the fifth.
Sophomore shortstop Annmarie Forenza (Hunterdon Central/Whitehouse Station, N.J.) tripled in a pair of runs to highlight Ithaca's three-run fifth. An inning later, senior first baseman Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) singled in two runs before Greaney's RBI hit. Ryan scored three runs and Forenza finished with two hits.
The Bombers collected their first run in the second when Ryan scored on a Geneseo error; the Blue Knights made three errors, leading to four unearned Ithaca runs.
Junior catcher Kerry Barger (Carmel/Carmel) singled home freshman infielder Molly O'Donnell (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) in the sixth to close out the game.
The Bombers continue play Tuesday afternoon, taking on Plattsburgh.
