ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard Jordan Marcus (Solomon Schecter/West Orange, N.J.) scored 36 points and junior forward Phil Barera (Belmont/Belmont, Mass.) pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds as the men's basketball team (15-7, 8-5 Empire 8) outscored visiting Utica (7-13, 2-9 Empire 8) 88-69 Wednesday.
After leading by as many as 12 points in the first half, Ithaca saw its advantage cut to just five with over 15 minutes to play in the game. A 10-2 Bomber run increased the lead to 13 at 58-45 before a pair of Utica rallies twice cut the lead to six. Consecutive three-pointers from freshman guard Eli Maravich (Chartiers Valley/Pittsburgh, Pa.) pushed the lead back into double-digits where it stayed for the remainder of the contest.
The Bombers closed the game on a 16-6 run, with Marcus scoring nine of those points.
Marcus eclipsed 30 points for the fifth time this season. He made five three-pointers in the win, his most since he made eight against Alfred on Jan. 15. Marcus is averaging 19.4 points per game on the season, leading the Bombers and ranking third in the Empire 8 entering play Tuesday.
Barera's 20 boards ere the fourth-highest single game total in program history. With 14 points, Barera also picked up his 11th double-double of the season.
Freshmen Sean Rossi (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) and Andrei Oztemel (Staples/Westport, Conn.) also reached double-figures in points, with each netting 10. Rossi picked up seven assists, giving him 173 on the season, the third-highest single season total in Ithaca history.
Senior center Tom Brown (Bayport-Blue Point/Bayport) tallied a season-high nine rebounds and seven points.
Ithaca took early control of the game, jumping out to leads of 15-5 and 19-7. Marcus and Rossi combined to score 16 of the team's first 23 points. An 11-2 Pioneer run cut the lead to just two points at 32-30 with four minutes to play. The Bombers netted the final nine points of the half—including four from Brown—to increase their lead to 11 at the half.
The Bombers return to action Friday with an 8 p.m. game at Hartwick.
