Ewing, N.J. – The 11th-ranked College of New Jersey (18-2-1) defeated the Ithaca women's soccer team (13-5-1) by a 3-0 score Sunday afternoon in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament second-round game at TCNJ. Ithaca made its 21st all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. No other school has made more.
The Bombers carried the play in the opening 30 minutes of the game, but didn't convert any of the offensive chances that were generated. The game's first quality chance came in the fourth minute following a passing buildup through the midfield that sent sophomore forward
Rachael Palladino (Lansing/Lansing) through on goal, but a defender challenged the shot, which was stopped at the right post. Other opportunities by freshman forward
Ellyn Grant-Keane (Lansing/Lansing) and sophomore midfielder
Caroline Jastremski (Notre Dame Academy/Staten Island) didn't dent the back of the net.
New Jersey scored two goals in a span of 1:48, both on direct kicks by
Nikki Migliori, to take a 2-0 lead. The Lions added a second-half goal by
Annie McCarthy following a corner kick to account for the final score.
Ithaca maintained pressure in the second half, and had two shots denied by the woodwork. A long-range effort from freshman back
Anna Gray (Delmar/Bethlehem) hit the crossbar, and the rebound fell to
Grant-Keane, whose header was wide of the net.
Jastremski was alone on the right-side of the penalty area nine minutes later, but her shot hit the left post.
Two further chances from
Rachael Palladino were denied by the TCNJ keeper in the second half. A hard, dipping strike in the 70th minute from the left side from 20 yards was parried away with a diving save, and a close-range volley from six yards forced another save at the left post in the 72nd minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Jessica Platt (Monument Mountain/New Marlborough, Mass.) started and made three saves. Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) played the final 14 minutes and made two saves.
Ithaca won the Empire 8 regular-season title and finished the year with 15 wins. It was the fifth consecutive year that Ithaca won 15 games or more.
