Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Ithaca (20-14) volleyball team split on day two of the Skidmore Invitational as the Bombers blanked Union (17-14), 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16), in a 10 a.m. match before they fell to Cortland (31-7), 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-17).
The Bombers tallied their second win of the season over Union and dropped their second straight to the Red Dragons.
Using the serve of sophomore
Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford), Ithaca took an early 10-3 first-set lead. Union inched its way back to pull within four at 14-10 before the Bombers tallied four unanswered of their own and were able to maintain the gap as they secured a 25-17 victory.
Ithaca won the first point of the second stint on a kill from junior
Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) and never gave up the lead. The Dutchmen twice knotted action but Ithaca held strong and notched a 25-19 win for a 2-0 series advantage.
The third and final set featured seven unanswered as senior
Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) held serve and rattled off two aces. Despite the 9-2 gap, Union responded with a run of its own to bring the set within two, 9-7, but Ithaca answered outscoring the Dutchmen, 9-2, en route to a 25-16 win that claimed the match.
Thoene led the Bombers with 13 kills, while juniors
Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) and
Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) each added 12.
Sophomore
Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford) and freshman
Sydney Folk (Long Beach/Long Beach) shared setting duties and tallied 20 and 16 assists, respectively.
Orlandini spearheaded the Bombers' defense with 17 digs, while senior
Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) added 15.
The Bombers dropped the second match of the day, 3-0, to the Red Dragons of Cortland.
After falling into a 22-13 deficit in the first set, the Bombers came alive and brought the match within one on a 9-1 run, but Cortland outlasted Ithaca down the stretch for a 25-23 first-set win.
Ithaca trailed early in the second until a
Hoeffner kill and a
Hayes ace deadlocked the set at 6-6. Cortland then responded with four unanswered points that helped propel the Red Dragons to a 25-14 victory.
Junior
Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) used a
Folk set to put away the first point of the third set, but Cortland would go ahead for good just two serves later. Ithaca pressured the Red Dragons, bringing the set within two at 10-8, but Cortland pulled ahead and claimed the third, 25-17.
Folk led Ithaca with 13 assists and
Woodcome added 12.
Woodcome and
Hayes each recorded 11 digs, while
Horton and
Folk each broke the double-digit plateau with 10.
Thoene put down five blocks (two solo, three assists) to lead the Bombers at the net.
Ithaca will host the Empire 8 Championships on Friday, Nov. 5. The Bombers are slated to face RIT at 11:30 a.m. in the first of two semifinal matches.
