Marcus Lifts Bombers Over Stevens With Late Basket

Marcus scored 14 second-half points to key the Ithaca comeback

ITHACA, N.Y.--A jumper from sophomore Jordan Marcus (Solomon Schechter/West Orange, N.J.) with five second remaining gave the men's basketball team an 85-83 win over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology (10-4, 5-3 Empire 8) Saturday. The Bombers (12-4, 5-2 Empire 8) had trailed for nearly the entire game and were down by as many as 12 points in the second half.

Ithaca rallied to tie the score at 83 on a 17-5 run capped by a layup from freshman point guard Sean Rossi (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) with just under one minute to play. Marcus nabbed the ball from Stevens with 34 seconds remaining on the ensuing Ducks possession. After the Bombers took a timeout, Marcus held the ball for 23 seconds before unleashing his game-winning shot from the paint.

Stevens was not able to get a shot off in its final possession.

Marcus led all players with 22 points in the game, including 14 in the second half. Rossi scored nine of Ithaca's points in the 19-5 Bomber run that closed the game. Senior Will Gaskins (Yorktown Heights/John F. Kennedy Catholic) and freshman Andrei Oztmel (Staples/Westport, Conn.) each hit three-point field goals in the game's final three minutes.

With 16 points and 11 assists, Rossi picked up his fourth career double-double. Oztemel tallied 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for his first double-double. Gaskins netted 13 points off the bench, a new career-high.

Ithaca held a brief 7-4 lead to open the game before the Ducks took the lead on an 11-6 run. The Stevens lead twice swelled to 10 points before six Bomber three-pointers—including one from Rossi as time expired—cut the Duck advantage to three points at 46-43.

The Bombers made 12 three-pointers in the game, with Oztemel making four and Gaskins and Marcus each adding three. Ithaca made 18 treys in Friday's win over Alfred, giving them 30 in a 2-0 weekend. Ithaca had five players score at least 10 points, with junior Phil Barera (Belmont/Belmont, Mass.) joining Gaskins, Marcus, Oztemel and Rossi with 15 points. Barera also grabbed eight rebounds, second only to Oztemel.

Ithaca continues its four-game homestand with an 8 p.m. game against Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday.
