Fredonia, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's swimming & diving team returned to competitive action and earned victories over Edinboro and Fredonia in a tri-meet hosted by Fredonia at the Steele Hall Natatorium. The Bombers (9-1) set three pool records in defeating Edinboro 138-99 and Fredonia 150-93.
Juniors Becca Blazak (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, Pa.) and Sheila Rhoades (Dryden/Dryden) were each part of two of the record-setting performances. Blazak won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.23, bettering the pool record time set one year ago by 2009 Ithaca graduate and current team assistant coach Lauren Botterbusch. Rhoades swam 24.61 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to win that event and eclipse the previous-record mark held by Ithaca senior Jen Heberton (Darien/Darien, Conn.). Blazak and Rhoades swam two of the legs of Ithaca's winning 200-yard freestyle relay which set a pool record with a time of 1:41.17. Freshman Carly Jones (Liverpool/Liverpool) and junior Joanna Ferreri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) were the other members of the winning relay. The previous record stood for four years.
Ithaca started the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay led by sophomore Missy Keesler (Union-Endicott/Endicott), Blazak, Jones and Rhoades. Jones also won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.59 seconds.
Other top finishes for the Bombers included sophomore Kelly Murphy (Blake/Silver Spring, Md.) placing third in both the 1,000 free (11:16.33) and 500 free (5:27.99). Keesler was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.73) and third in the 200 free (2:02.84). Senior Shannon Archer (Niskayuna/Scotia) was second in the 500 free (5:26.64), sophomore Cali DeSanto (Mexico/Mexico) was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.41) and senior diver Naomi Mark (Dansville/Dansville) placed second in 1-meter diving with a score of 211.04 points.
Ithaca returns to action Jan. 23 at Rochester.
