Bombers Fall in Overtime

Courtney Dowell set a career high in saves

ITHACA, N.Y. – Geneseo (1-0) scored the game-winning goal in overtime in a 4-3 win over the Ithaca (0-1) field hockey team in the season-opener for both teams Wednesday at Yavits Field. The Bombers rallied from a two-goal deficit by scoring twice in the second half to force overtime.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Dowell (Massapequa/Massapequa) made a career-high 17 saves.

Junior back Key Fox (Hunterdon Central [N.J]/Solebury, Pa.) got the Bombers on the board in the 11th minute on an assist from senior midfielder Annie Onzik (Bishop O'Reilly/Shavertown, Pa.). Onzik shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner and the shot was deflected in by Fox at the left post. That tied the score 1-1.

The Bombers scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half. Freshman forward Julia Conroy (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) scored on a pass from classmate Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) in the 55th minute. Onzik added her first goal of the season on an assist from junior back Mia Muzio (Rockport/Rockport, Mass.) in the 50th minute.

Ithaca held Geneseo scoreless during a five-minute stretch when the Bombers played one player short due to a yellow card in the second half. The Blue Knights scored in the seventh minute of sudden-death overtime.

The Bombers return to action Saturday at Morrisville at 1 p.m.
