ITHACA, N.Y. – The #9 Ithaca women's soccer team (5-1-0, 3-0-0 Empire 8) defeated Stevens Institute of Technology (0-8-0, 0-1-0 Empire 8) 6-0 in an Empire 8 match Saturday at Carp Wood Field. The Bombers held Stevens to just two shots in the game, and have won all four meetings between the teams in the series history.
Ithaca opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a goal by senior midfielder Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady) who converted from inside the penalty area following a pass from sophomore midfielder Megan Trager (Sharon/Sharon, Mass.). Ithaca doubled its lead two minutes later as Scheffer headed in a pass from Trager.
The Bombers scored four times in the second half, beginning with a goal from graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center). That goal was also assisted by Trager, who set a career-high in points with three assists in the game. Freshman forward Rachel Palladino (Lansing/Groton), junior forward Kelly Gannon (Schoharie/Howe Caverns) and freshman midfielder Julie Winn (Sutton/Sutton, Mass.) all scored in the second half. It was Gannon's first goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) didn't face any shots but earned the win in 45 minutes of action. Junior Jessica Platt (Monument Mountain/New Marlborough, Mass.) made two saves in 36 minutes and freshman Becca Salant (Holliston/Holliston, Mass.) played the final nine minutes in the team's shutout.
The Bombers return to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they host Alfred.
