ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's tennis team (3-0, 2-0 Empire 8) defeated Hartwick (0-3, 0-2 Empire 8) 9-0 in a conference tennis match Thursday at the Ithaca College Tennis Courts. The Bombers have now won 35 straight regular season and postseason matches against Empire 8 opponents over the last five seasons.
Ithaca quickly swept through the doubles matches as freshman Cristina Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) teamed with junior Agata Kubik (C.K. Norwid Gen. Lyceum/Czestochowa, Poland) to win 8-0 at first doubles. Junior Melanie Cohen (Hatboro-Horsham/Ambler, Pa.) and junior Melissa Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) were 8-2 winners at second doubles and the team of sophomore Kelsey Harness (Allegan/Allegan, Mich.) and freshman Laurel Salladay (Pinkerton Academy/Hampstead, N.H.) won at third doubles. It was the first doubles win in dual-match competition in the careers of Harness and Salladay.
Current Empire 8 Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, senior Sarah Hollis (Greens Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.), earned her 49th career singles victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles. She is now tied for third all-time in career singles wins at Ithaca with 2008 graduate Rachel Gunderson. Cristina Nunez, Kubik, Cohen, Melissa Nunez and sophomore Becky Campbell (Sanford School/Chadds Ford, Pa.) were the other singles winners for Ithaca.
The Bombers continue Empire 8 play Wednesday at Alfred.
