ITHACA, N.Y. -- The top-seeded softball team (25-15) eliminated third-seeded Alfred (23-7) with a 1-0 win in Friday's third game of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament. The tournament schedule has been pushed back (game one went 11 innings, game two went 16 innings and game three featured an 80-minute rain delay between the third and fourth innings) and the double-elimination tournament continues Saturday at 11 a.m.
Junior third baseman Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) drove in the game's only run, following a two-out single by freshman second baseman Annmarie Forenza (Hunterdon CentralWhitehouse Station, N.J.) with a run-scoring double to right field.
Junior Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) threw her third shutout of the season, allowing just two hits and four walks. She left the bases loaded in the second and worked out of trouble in the sixth, stranding runners at first and third.
The Bombers, who have won eight of the nine Empire 8 titles will face either second-seeded St. John Fisher or fourth-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cardinals and Tigers play in Saturday's first game, with the winner advancing to the championship round and the loser taking on Ithaca.
