No. 12 Baseball Wins Slugfest With Oneonta

Trevor Wolf set career highs with four hits and four RBIs.

Oneonta, N.Y.--Freshman catcher Conor Thompson (West Genesee/Syracuse) drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning to cap a 15-14 Ithaca win over Oneonta (26-11) Monday afternoon. The Bombers (25-7), who saw leads of 7-3 and 10-8 disappear in the game, scored five times over the final three innings to rally from a 14-10 deficit.

Thompson's game-winner came with two outs in the ninth. Sophomore Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) hit a one-out single and stole second after an Ithaca flyout. Thompson came up next and drove the ball the other way to bring Zappia home.

Ithaca had a season-best 21 hits in the game. All nine starters had at least one, and six Bombers had multi-hit games. Senior Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and freshman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in.

Seniors Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.) and sophomores David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) and Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich) each drove in a pair of runs.

The Bombers' scored first in the game, plating single runs in the first and third innings. After the Red Dragons scored three times in the bottom of the third, Ithaca reclaimed the lead with a five-run fourth. The Bombers scored all five of their runs with two outs, including two runs on a single from Samela.

Eleven Oneonta runs over the fourth through fifth innings gave the home team a 14-10 lead, but the Red Dragons would not score again in the game.

Ithaca tied the score at 14 with four runs in the seventh. Perez drove in Samela on a one-out single, and scored along with Bednarcyk on a two-out hit from Wolf. Zappia capped the inning with an RBI single of his own.

Freshman Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) picked up the in after the pitching the final 1 1/3 innings. He held the Red Dragons scoreless and hitless and struck out two. Healy is now 2-0 on the season.

The Bombers return to Freeman Field Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game against Rochester.
