Buffalo, N.Y. -- The softball team (24-14) split a doubleheader with host Buffalo State (25-11) on Sunday. The Bombers dropped game one 2-0 and took the second game with a four-run ninth that broke a 2-2 tie since the fourth inning.
Junior Regina Douglas (James Caldwell/West Caldwell, N.J.) broke the game open with a double to right-center field in the ninth that drove in all three Bombers on base. In the next at-bat, freshman Tricia Santelli (Newark/Newark) picked up her second hit of the day with an RBI single that drove in the fourth and final run of the inning.
Junior pitcher Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched all nine innings in a complete game effort to pick up her team-best 14th win of the season.
Sophomores Kerry Barger (Carmel/Carmel) and Brittany Lillie (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) each registered multiple hits in game two. Barger went 3-for-3 and scored two runs while driving in the game's first two runs on a home run in the fourth inning. Lillie went 2-for-4 in the game and also scored two runs.
In game one, each team was held to just four hits in a pitcher's duel. The Bengals produced a run in the third and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to secure the win. Sophomore Brittany Lillie (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) allowed just one hit through her first five finnings in the pitcher's circle. She retired eight straight batters at one point from the bottom of the third through the end of the fifth.
The Bombers will return to Kostrinsky Field on Wednesday for a doubleheader against King's at 3 p.m.
