ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Bombers (22-12) were swept by Division I Cornell (36-10) in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Ithaca dropped the first game 10-0 and lost the second game 11-3.
The Big Red, winners of the Ivy League South Division, scored a run in every inning of game two off of junior Alyssa Brook (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.). Brook struck out three batters in five innings to raise her strikeout total to 118 on the season.
Freshman Annmarie Forenza (Hunterdon Central/Whitehouse Station, N.J.) singled to center field to lead off the second game. She would later score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kerry Barger (Carmel/Carmel), who picked up her 20th RBI for the season on the play.
In the fifth, the Bombers would add two more runs as they cut the Big Red lead to 7-3. Freshman Jodie Eichel (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.) recorded her first career hit as a Bomber on a single that drove in classmate Julianna Van Meter (Rome Free Academy/Rome). Sophomore Courtney Noster (Clearview/Lorain, Ohio) would score on the ensuing play from third base with a ground ball to the right side of the infield from junior Alyssa Guzman (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh). Noster reached base on a single to center field. She went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
Cornell answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and added one more in the fifth to secure the victory.
The Bombers will return to action on Friday for a doubleheader against host Alfred at 3 p.m. Ithaca can secure the league's regular-season title by winning either of Friday's games at Alfred.
