No. 27 Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Clinches Empire 8 Title

Matt Samela stole five bases in the doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y.--The No. 27 Bombers (22-6) won both games of a doubleheader Sunday against St. John Fisher (15-12, 5-5 Empire 8) by scores of 7-2 and 5-0. With a 12-2 conference record, the Bombers have clinched their ninth straight Empire 8 title.

In the first game, junior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) hurled a complete game to pick up his sixth win of the year. Fishback allowed seven hits, two runs, and no walks, while striking out four. He retired 13 of the final 15 batters.

The top of the lineup carried the offense in the opener. The 1-2-3 hitters, senior center fielder Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.), senior shortstop Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport), and senior second baseman Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.) combined to go 7-for-12. Perez knocked in Bednarcyk in the first with a triple. Perez then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome).

Perez picked up his second and third RBI of the game in the fourth when he drove in Samela and Bednarcyk with a two-out single. Perez has 21 RBI this season.

The Bombers tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Sophomore left fielder Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) hit a two-run single, scoring Abone and sophomore designated hitter Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.), who doubled. Samela later plated Zappia to finish the scoring.

In game two, hits from sophomore third baseman David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) and Streich gave Ithaca a 2-0 lead for much of the game. The Bombers put the game out of reach in the sixth by scoring three more runs. A 2-RBI double from Zappia and an RBI double by senior first baseman Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) were the big blows. Abone had a mutli-hit game in the nightcap.

On the hill, sophomore Dan Lynch (Williamsville South/East Amherst) threw a complete game shutout to improve his record to 4-2. Lynch allowed just five hits and two walks. He struck out five and made several excellent defensive plays.

Samela stole three bases in the first game and two more in the nightcap.

Ithaca travels to Rochester Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.
