No. 27 Baseball Takes Doubleheader from Pioneers

Mike Armstrogn drove in three runs on the day.

Rome, N.Y.--The Bombers (16-5, 7-1 Empire 8) extended their winning streak to four games with a pair of wins over Utica (2-11, 0-4 Empire 8) Friday evening. Ithaca scored 11 times in the seventh to win the opener 12-1, and came back to win the nightcap 6-2.

Senior righthander Pete MacDaniel (Schuylerville/Gansevoort), who drew the game one start, threw his fourth complete game of the season and held the Pioneers to just five hits over seven innings, striking out five. He improved his record to 6-0 and lowered his earned run average to 1.37.

Game two starter Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) also stayed perfect on the season, moving to 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA through seven games. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, holding Utica to two runs.

With the score knotted at one in the seventh inning of game one, the Bombers loaded the bases on two hit batters sandwiched around a single. Senior Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) broke the tie with an RBI single to right that plated junior Brian Grastorf (Niskayuna/Rexford).

The Bombers scored 10 more times in the inning, with senior Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and juniors Mike Armstrong (Penfield/Penfield) and Jon Krakower (The Berkshire School/Albany) each driving in two runs on base hits. Armstrong and Samela each hit a double in the inning, as did sophomore Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville).

Junior #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) chipped in a run-scoring single in the seventh, while sophomore David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington). Bednarcyk, whose RBI single started the Bombers' bombardment of runs, drove in the inning's 11th run on a sacrfice fly of his own.

With his team comfortably ahead, MacDaniel pitched a perfect seventh to secure his team-leading sixth victory.

Every Bomber in the starting lineup collected a hit in the opening game, with Bednarcyk, Ahonen, Abone, Armstrong, and designated hitter Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) getting two apiece.

In game two, the Bombers manufactured a pair of runs to open the game. Samela and Bednarcyk were hit by pitches and moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Ahonen scored Samela with a groundout, with Bednarcyk coming around a sacrifice fly off the bat of Streitch.

Wolf scored Ithaca's third run on a passed ball in the third, with Armstrong and Zappia contributing sixth-inning RBI singles.

With his team up 6-2 in the seventh, freshman Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) sealed the sweep with a strikeout of the games last batter.

Ithaca and Utica play their second doubleheader Saturday, with game one set for a 1 p.m. start.
