Rochester, N.Y.--Senior guard Megan Rumschik (Williamsville East/East Amherst) hit a jumper with under 30 seconds to play to lead Ithaca to a 50-49 win over Nazareth Friday night. Down 49-44 with two minutes to play, the Bombers (16-8, 12-3 Empire 8) scored the game's final six points to defeat the Golden Flyers (12-12, 6-9). Having already secured a spot in the Empire 8 playoffs, Ithaca can clinch the tournament's top seed with a win over Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday.
Rumschik cut the lead to 49-46 on a layup following her own steal with 2:01 left on the clock. After a pair of missed Gold Flyer free throws, junior guard Katherine Bixby (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.) had a layup of her own to cut the Nazareth advantage to one. Another steal, this one by senior forward Tracy Bradley (Lewiston/Brunswick, Maine), set up Rumschik's game-winning shot, which came with 24 seconds to play.
The Golden Flyers shot and missed on their next possession, and could not attempt a shot in their final two.
Bixby led the Bombers in scoring with 12 points, with Rumschik and junior Elissa Klie (Ramapo/Wyckoff, N.J.) each tallying10. Rumschik and Klie each added four steals. Bradley narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Ithaca took a one point lead into the second half at 27-26. Nazareth took leads of 6-0 and 13-5 in the first half before eight unanswered Bomber points tied the score at 20. Klie scored five points in the final five minutes of the half to help give the Bombers the advantage heading in to halftime.
Nazareth retook the lead shortly into the second period, with its advantage swelling to as many as six points. The Golden Flyers took the 49-44 lead with over two minutes to play, but would not score again in the game.
The Bombers take on RIT at noon Sunday.
