ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's soccer team (7-6-3, 3-3-1 Empire 8) scored two second-half goals in a 2-1 win over Elmira (10-5-1, 3-3-0 Empire 8) Saturday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. The Bombers remain in contention for the Empire 8 playoffs pending results of other conference games yet to be played. Ithaca has won 10 consecutive games against Elmira.
The game was played under windy conditions and all three goals were scored by the team playing with a favorable wind at its back. Ithaca tied the score in the 50th minute on a corner kick. Sophomore defender Matt Anthony (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) crossed a ball from the corner that deflected into the net off of an Elmira player. It was Anthony's first career goal.
Ithaca scored the eventual game-winner in the 70th minute on the first career goal for freshman forward Dan Shirley (Hand/Madison, Conn.). Shirley scored after receiving a cross from senior midfielder Gerard Lewis (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia).
Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Kirshner (Haverford/Haverford, Pa.) made three saves.
It was the final regular-season home game for eight Ithaca seniors – forward Jeff South (Aptos/Aptos, Calif.), midfielders Lewis, Chris Havis (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Hiroshi Torii (Glen Rock/Glen Rock, N.J.), and backs Ata Movassaghi (Ithaca/Ithaca), Michael Jordhamo (Arlington/Hopewell Junction), Justin Wu (Phillips Academy/Concord, Mass.) and Max Petraglia (Bethlehem Central/Delmar).
The Bombers held a 23-9 advantage in shots in the game and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
