ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's soccer team (6-6-3) scored a goal in each half and went on to a 2-1 win over Brockport (9-5-2) Tuesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. The Bombers earned their first win over a regionally-ranked opponent this season. Brockport entered the game ranked ninth in the East Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Bombers got off to a great start with a goal in the sixth minute. The first shot of the game came from the head of junior midfielder Jeff Geyer (Rham/Hebron, Conn.) and forced a diving save from the Brockport goalkeeper that resulted in an Ithaca corner kick. Geyer took the corner, crossed it from the left side, and senior forward Jeff South (Aptos/Aptos, Calif.) turned in a clear header from five yards out to put the Bombers in front. It was South's second goal of the season.
Ithaca doubled its lead in the 56th minute on a goal from senior midfielder Gerard Lewis (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia). Lewis controlled a cross by junior forward Fernando Casanova (Loyola/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) at the left post, calmly eluded a defender and fired a low shot past the Brockport goalkeeper.
Ithaca junior goalkeeper Justin Parlapiano (Stafford/Stafford Springs, Conn.) started in goal and made three saves. He improved his record this season to 5-4-3. His best save of the game came in the 70th minute when Parlapiano dove to his right, stopped a close-range header from Brockport's second-leading scorer and didn't allow a rebound. That save preserved Ithaca's 2-1 lead.
The Bombers held a 17-9 advantage in shots in the game and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Ithaca concludes its regular season Saturday at noon with the Empire 8 finale against Elmira. The Bombers will keep their conference playoff hopes alive with a win over Elmira.
