Men's Soccer Shuts Down Rensselaer

Andy Wilhelm recorded his first shutout of the season
ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ithaca men's soccer team (5-1-0) picked up its second straight victory, with a 1-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (5-2-0) Saturday. The Bombers improved to a perfect 3-0-0 at Carp Wood Field this season.

Ithaca challenged the Rensselaer defense in the first half. The Bombers took seven shots to Rensselaer's three. In the second half, junior midfielder Chris Havis (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored the game-winning goal. Havis received a long pass from junior midfielder Ata Movassaghi (Ithaca/Ithaca) and ripped the shot into the top left corner of the net. Havis is now tied for the team lead with six points. The Bombers outshot Rensselaer 10-8.

Senior goalkeeper Andy Wilhelm (Centennial/Ellicott City, Md.) made four saves. The shutout is his first of the season and 10th of his career. His biggest save came with four minutes left in the game. A direct kick curled toward the far post, but Wilhelm dove to his left and tipped the ball away.

The Bombers open Empire 8 play Saturday when they play at Utica at noon.
