ITHACA, N.Y. – The 13th-ranked women's soccer team (0-0-1) opened its season with a scoreless tie Friday against visiting Cortland in a game that went two overtimes.
The Bombers outshot the Red Dragons 21-14, including a 15-9 advantage after the first half. Ithaca's best chance came in the second overtime when junior #Winnie Adrien (Blairstown Academy/Selden, N.J.)# headed a ball that Cortland's goalkeeper pinned against the ground before all of it had crossed the goal line.
That play directly followed a series when the Red Dragons nearly scored on a breakaway. Their shot hit the crossbar and was tipped away by sophomore Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.), who corralled the ball near the top of the box to start Ithaca's possession.
Sotomayor, who was making her first career start, finished with seven saves. The Bombers were playing their first overtime game since a contest against Oneonta on Sept. 13, 2006, and played to a scoreless tie for the first time since Oct. 22, 2005.
Ithaca is idle until traveling to Ewing, N.J., for College of New Jersey's Adidas Classic Saturday and Sunday. The Bombers face Eastern Saturday and take on the host Lions, ranked third nationally, in Sunday's game.
