#4 Softball Team Sweeps Utica; Sets Consecutive Shutout Record

Mel Chinigo drove in four runs in the doubleheader
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The fourth-ranked Bombers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of Utica. They won the first game 8-0 and the second 12-0, both going six innings. The Bombers set a new school record with eight-consecutive shutouts, breaking the mark of six set by the 2001 team. They are 6-0 in Empire 8 play.

In the first game, the Bombers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Kaitlyn Dulac (Bay View/East Greenwich, R.I.) drove in the game’s first run with a double to left center. She would later score on an error by the second baseman. Sophomore Jess Stangarone (Brewster/Brewster) hit an RBI single up the middle to cap off the scoring. They added another run in the third inning when junior Mel Chinigo (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, junior Hannah Shalett (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in another run. Cutspec hit a walk-off two-run double in the sixth inning, giving her a game-high three RBI’s. Sophomore Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) improved to 10-1, allowing two hits and striking out nine.

Sophomore Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Vancouver/British Columbia, Canada) struck out 6 in a one-hitter in the second game. Utica’s only hit was a double by pitcher Andrea Curley, but she was doubled up on a line drive by the next batter. Stangarone went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI’s. Senior Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Mystic, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Dulac went 2-for-3 with three runs and Chinigo collected three RBI’s.
