Cortland Wins Regional Title With 9-7 Win Over Ithaca

Box Score

Auburn, N.Y. -- In the championship, Cortland scored the game’s first nine runs, but Ithaca rallied for five in the seventh and two in the bottom of the ninth. With two runners on and the Bombers trailing by three runs, freshman catcher Rob Raux (Ilion/Frankfort) nearly tied the game with a two-out, three-run home run, but his opposite-field drive fell just a few feet short of going out and wound up an RBI double. Stamboly and senior second baseman Marty O’Boyle (Verona/Verona, N.J.) hit two-run singles to spark the seventh-inning rally. Sophomore outfielder Eric Maya (Rome Free Academy/Rome) doubled and singled, drove in three runs and scored two. O’Boyle finished with two RBI’s and two hits (his season and career-ending 26-game hitting streak fell one short of Ithaca’s school record). Junior third Bryan Stamboly (Rome Free Academy/Rome) was two-for-four with two runs scored.

Maya, O’Boyle and sophomore pitcher Matt Lavoie (Moses Brown/Providence, R.I.) were named to the all-tournament team.
