ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team moved to 2-0 on Saturday afternoon as it took down Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 2-1, in its home opener.
The visiting Engineers dominated possession early, seeing their aggression pay off in the form of a goal in the 16th minute.
IC looked to tie things up at the 32-minute mark as
Casey Gorman found herself in a strong scoring position. Her shot made its way on goal, where it was stopped by a diving Ayla Verhuel to maintain WPI's lead. The visitors added one more shot on
Katrina Varnum before time ran out on the opening half, but the junior was able to turn it away to keep the contest within a manageable distance.
Things got interesting in the second half as a streaking
Zara Nourie battled her way into the box before being fouled by Emma Fitzgerald. The senior made light work of the Engineers' keeper to capitalize on the penalty kick, leveling the game at 1-1 with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The Bombers took control of the match in the 80th minute when an
Ellie Scivetti pass found its way onto the foot of
Mia Medearis for a quick score.
With three minutes left in the contest, WPI's Sarah Frye sent a strong shot toward a moving Varnum, who was able to make the stop and protect her team's lead.
Ithaca moves to 2-0 on the season, while Worcester drops to 0-2 following the 2-1 conclusion.
Nourie and Medearis recorded their first goals of the season in the victory, while Scivetti recorded the first point of her collegiate career. Varnum finished the day with four saves for her second win of the season.
The Bombers will return to action tomorrow, September 6, as they host the Bears of Smith College for a noon start.
