ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team lost its second game of the season to a Liberty League opponent in the William Smith Herons. The Bombers played its second conference game and are now winless in Liberty League play after a 3-1 loss on Wednesday.
William Smith opened this game up early, scoring on a corner just five minutes in. Izzy Thors would head the ball up to Grace Metzler and waste no time head-butting it into the crossbar. IC goalkeeper Katrina Varnum couldn't reach it, Varnum allowed her first goal since Sept. 22 against Cortland.
The Bombers would have another chance right away from Alyssa Andracki, but she would send it just wide of the far side post.
This kickstarted some very back and forth play between both teams and some minor chances. This caused the physicality to amp up with Lilyana Baldi pulling a Heron down and escaping the exchange with only a foul.
The Bombers would end the first half with six shots faced and forcing Katrina Varnum to make four saves.
The second half opened up the same way the first half ended. With both teams deadlocked and no real chances being created leading to a lot of back and forth throw-ins and pushing the play to the side of the net.
Until the 59th minutes where William Smith would score off of a corner opportunity yet again. The Herons knocked the ball into the box but IC would force the play back, where Miranda Demura fired a pass back into the box aiming to cross but it would be blocked by a Bomber defender and fired a shot into the top right corner. Giving the Herons a 2-0 lead to start the second half.
The Bombers wouldn't give up. Meghan Maragioglio would get the Bombers on the board with a long flick pass from Zara Nourie. Maragioglio would score on a high center shot.
The second half scoring wouldn't end there. Just when the Bombers started storming back in the dying minutes of the match Grace Metzler put the Bombers on ice. Metzler gained a breakaway and shot one low along the left post winning the game for the Herons.
