ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College women's soccer team hosted its third Liberty League matchup of the season on Saturday, taking on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds at Carp Wood Field and earning its first conference victory. With the win, the Bombers improved to 5-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Liberty League play.
Ithaca controlled much of the possession early in the first half, limiting Skidmore's opportunities while consistently creating chances of its own. The Bombers broke through in the 20th minute when
Julia Gilgar found the back of the net to give Ithaca a 1-0 lead. Gilgar's goal came off an assist from
Jayne Bogle following an Ithaca corner kick.
The Bombers continued to battle the Thoroughbreds for possession as the first half progressed. Skidmore generated a dangerous opportunity at the 35:10 mark when a Thoroughbred put a shot on frame, but Ithaca goalkeeper
Katrina Varnum came up with an important save to preserve the Bombers' 1-0 advantage.
The Bombers came out aggressively to begin the second half, putting pressure on Skidmore's defense as they looked to extend their lead. Possession shifted back and forth throughout the remainder of the match, but Ithaca's defense remained composed and held off the Thoroughbreds to secure the 1-0 victory and the team's third shutout of the season.
Varnum secured the shutout with a pair of saves.
Ithaca will return to Liberty League action on Oct. 10 when the Bombers travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for their next conference matchup.
