CLINTON, N.Y. – Despite trailing 5-1 after the first quarter, the Ithaca College men's lacrosse team mounted a comeback that ultimately fell short, as Hamilton College scored the game-winning goal with 1:29 remaining in overtime on Tuesday. The Continentals converted on a man-up opportunity to secure the 11-10 non-conference victory, dropping the Bombers to 5-4 overall.
Hamilton jumped out to an early advantage, scoring four goals in the opening 7:47 of the first quarter, including two from Thomas Healy. The Continentals extended the lead to 5–0 when Frank Coyle found Charlie Boon, who beat
Andrew Minard. Following an Ithaca timeout, the Bombers responded as
Tim Rogers netted his 26th goal of the season to close the quarter.
Healy completed a first half hat trick early in the second quarter, but the Bombers' offense began firing on all cylinders as the defense tightened up. Ithaca scored four unanswered goals, including two from
Tim Rogers, with the final tally coming on an unassisted man-up effort with 5:14 remaining in the period to make it 6-5. The teams then traded goals to close the half, as
Will Kleine assisted
Lucas Proctor on Ithaca's final score of the quarter.
The Bombers received goals from
Will Kleine and
Ethan Adrid, with Kleine assisting on Adrid's 10th goal of the season, as Ithaca outscored the Continentals 2-1 in the period to tie the game at 8-8. Ithaca forced Hamilton into five turnovers as the pressure continued heading into the fourth quarter.
Hamilton opened the final period with two consecutive goals, but following a
Liam Alberti faceoff win, Ithaca's
Brendan Occhino cut into the deficit at the 11:30 mark. After Jack Williams denied a shot attempt from
Ethan Adrid,
Will Kleine tied the game at 10–10. The final 10 minutes of the fourth quarter turned into a defensive battle, with
Andrew Minard recording a pair of saves.
Minard made two more saves to keep the Bombers alive in overtime, but Hamilton sealed the victory with 1:29 remaining as Frank Coyle set up Carson Kraus on a man-up goal. Ithaca placed 24 of its 33 shot attempts on goal and
Tim Rogers finished with a team-high four goals and
Will Kleine had five points on three assists and a pair of goals.
Next up, the Bombers return to Higgins Stadium on Saturday, March 28 to host No. 15 St. Lawrence University for a Liberty League matchup at 12 p.m.
