Baseball Concludes Series at Rochester with Split on Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Ithaca College baseball team wrapped up its first weekend of Liberty League action at Rochester on Saturday afternoon and came away with a split as the Bombers dropped the opener, 5-4, but rebounded to win the nightcap, 9-4. Ithaca is now 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in the Liberty League.

GAME ONE: ROCHESTER 5, ITHACA 4

Ithaca jumped out to a 3-0 through five innings of play as the Bombers plated a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Nate Rodriguez to bring in Lucas Orlovitz and then Camden Laney drove in Sheldon Jay Walker III in the third on a base hit up the middle. Ethan Fantel made it 3-0 in the fifth on a single to center that pushed Walker across the plate.

Rochester came back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on four hits to tie the game at 3-3, but IC regained the lead in the sixth, 4-3, on a Liam Tiernan double to left that scored Ethan Daddabbo all the way from first base.

A sacrifice fly from the Yellowjackets in the seventh inning knotted the game back up and then UR took the lead, in what would be the eventual game-winning run, on a sacrifice bunt and error in the eighth.

All nine batters in the lineup recorded a hit for IC as Walker led the way, going 2-for-5.

Reed Bailey tossed 7.0 innings in a no-decision as he allowed four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Cooper Albert took the loss with an unearned run in one inning of relief.

GAME TWO: ITHACA 9, ROCHESTER 4

The Bombers used a six-run eighth inning to flip a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead and then tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to come away with the 9-4 victory.

In the eighth, IC loaded the bases on three straight walks after the first batter of the inning was retired. A hit by pitch to Anthony Mestre pushed home Zachary Barron and then Ethan Fantel followed with a two-run single to right, and an error on the play cleared the bases as Walker, Mestre and Liam Tiernan crossed the plate to make it 6-3. After a pitching change, Laney picked up an RBI base hit as Fantel came home and then inning was capped off with a squeeze from Isaiah Smith with Laney scooting home for the final run of the inning.

Walker drove home the final run of the contest with a double down the line to bring in Barron.

Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Matt Curtis and a RBI single from Walker, but Rochester tied the game in the third and went ahead with a run in the sixth inning.

Danny Drotos improved to 2-0 on the season as he tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Luke Zelinko picked up his fourth save of the season in 2.0 hitless innings out of the bullpen and he also fanned four batters. Richard Zangara started for IC and went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Ithaca will host St. John Fisher on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and then play Clarkson for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
