MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ithaca College baseball team will travel back to New York after the Bombers concluded their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach with a 12-11 victory on Wesleyan University on Tuesday morning. Ithaca is now 6-4 on the season.
Ithaca fell behind early in the contest, 8-2, as the Cardinals plated seven runs in the top of the second inning after IC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. In that initial at bat,
Sheldon Jay Walker III and
Anthony Mestre pulled off a double steal and an overthrow allowed Walker to score.
Ethan Fantel then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Mestre.
The Bombers pulled to within 8-4 in the bottom of the second as Walker and Mestre each delivered RBI singles, scoring
Lucas Orlovitz and
Owen Callahan. In the bottom of the fourth, Mestre drove home two more on a base hit to plate Orlovitz and
Liam Tiernan.
Wesleyan responded to IC's rally attempt with three runs in the top of the sixth as a dropped fly ball allowed two runs in and a single followed with the third run of the inning to make it 11-6.
Ithaca would battle back in the bottom half of the sixth with five runs to knot the game at 11-11. Fantel doubled in a pair of runs – Tiernan and
Colin Dunn – to start the rally and
Camden Laney drove in Mestre to bring Ithaca to within two runs. Curtis picked up another RBI on a base hit to bring home Fantel and Orlovitz tied the game with a single, pushing home Laney.
The Bombers then took the lead, 12-11, in the bottom of the seventh on a balk that allowed Dunn to score the eventual game-winning run.
Mestre went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Walker, Orlovitz and Callahan also collected multi-hit games.
Sean Minnick earned the win in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and
Luke Zelinko picked up his first save of the season in a scoreless ninth inning of work.
Ithaca is set to host Rochester in both teams' Liberty League opener on Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m. and then the teams head to Rochester for a doubleheader on Saturday.
