Football Hangs On at Hobart for 27-20 Win

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College football team improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Liberty League with a 27-20 win over Hobart College on Saturday at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.

The Bombers totaled 320 yards of offense and 24 first downs and controlled the clock, holding the ball for 37:09 to Hobart's 22:51. Hobart was flagged nine times for 92 yards.

Ithaca struck first as Chris Scully scored on a 2-yard run with 2:40 left in the first quarter, and a PAT by Andrew Rice made it 7-0.

The lead grew in the second quarter when Rice connected on a 23-yard field goal with 11:01 to play. Just 30 seconds later, Michael Reed found Nicholas Lang for a 21-yard touchdown at the 10:31 mark to make it 17-0.

Hobart got on the board with a 25-yard field goal from Owen McNulty with 8:50 left in the half, but Rice answered with a 32-yarder with 1:04 remaining to give Ithaca a 20-3 lead at intermission.

The Statesmen cut into the deficit in the third quarter when Jeremy Weiss hit Johnny Harding for a 99-yard touchdown with 11:04 remaining. It is the longest pass and catch in Hobart history and made it 20-10.

McNulty added a 24-yard field goal with 14:39 to go in the fourth quarter to make it 20-13, but Scully answered with a 7-yard touchdown run at the 9:17 mark to push the lead back to 27-13. E.J. Taylor ran 12 yards for a Hobart touchdown with 7:46 remaining to set the final score at 27-20.

Scully finished with 61 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Chase Myers added 24 yards on four attempts, and Reed gained 59 net yards on the ground.

Reed also threw for 178 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-27 passing with no interceptions. Lang was on the receiving end of seven receptions for 84 yards, while Antwan Harvey had five catches for 35 yards.

Joe Spirra, RJ Boynton and Henry Takacs each led the defense with seven tackles. Takacs also had a tackle for loss, while Chris Clax and Landon Varley combined on another.

Rice averaged 58.2 yards on six kickoffs with one touchback, and Caleb Wandell punted four times for a 36.5-yard average, with three landing inside the 20.

Ithaca returns home next Saturday, October 10, to face the University of Rochester at 1 p.m. at Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium.
