CORTLAND, N.Y. – After a one-day delay due to inclement weather, the Ithaca College women's soccer team made the short trip across town for a non-conference matchup against SUNY Cortland on Wednesday afternoon. Ithaca had the more dangerous scoring chances but the game remained deadlocked 0-0 through 90 minutes. With the draw, Ithaca improved to 3-2-2.
The Bombers came out aggressive from the opening whistle, applying early pressure. In just the third minute,
Kaelyn Fernandez nutmegged a defender and fired a shot on goal, forcing a save from Cortland goalkeeper Olivia Rouse. Moments later, Ithaca keeper
Katrina Varnum was called into action, making a crucial stop on a close-range attempt by Cassia Schuyler inside the 18-yard box.
Ithaca continued to push for a breakthrough.
Ava Detorie had a shot blocked at the top of the box, and off the ensuing pressure,
Lilyana Baldi lofted a chip shot just over the crossbar. In the 32nd minute,
Jayne Bogle tested Rouse again with a shot that required another save. The Bombers nearly broke through in the 42nd minute when
Devin Sylvia's effort narrowly missed, sailing just over the bar.
Through the first 45 minutes, Ithaca held an 8-3 advantage in shot attempts. Ithaca continued to control the tempo into the second half, maintaining their attacking pressure. In the 55th minute,
Julia Gilgar forced Cortland goalkeeper Olivia Rouse into a full-extension diving save to keep the match scoreless. The Red Dragons responded quickly on the counter, with Gianna Cirilla attempting a shot from a wide angle that missed the target.
Rouse remained a key figure for Cortland, coming up big again in the 60th minute by standing tall to deny a close-range effort from
Zara Nourie. The senior goalkeeper continued her standout performance, preserving the clean sheet with another save on
Lilyana Baldi at the 66:29 mark.
Despite the scoreline, Ithaca remained the more dangerous side. In the 73rd minute,
Ella Shorkey saw her shot blocked as the Bombers kept pressing for a breakthrough. This time it was
Katrina Varnum who was full extension when she made a 78
th minute save. The Red Dragons thought they were in but an offsides was called with under eight minutes remaining.
Rouse would make one final save in the 87
th minute on a close-range attempt from
Kaelyn Fernandez as Ithaca had a late sequence of corner kick chances as it finished tied 0-0. Ithaca ended with 19 shots, six shots on goal.
Next up, Ithaca will travel to Vassar College for their first Liberty League matchup of the season on Saturday. The game will start at 1 p.m.
