Ithaca Women’s Soccer Shutout Elmira to Begin the 2025 Season

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team opened its season with a commanding 2–0 shutout victory over Elmira College on Friday night at Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium.

Despite the departure of last season's top three scorers and starting goalkeeper Grace Hickey, the Bombers showed plenty of strength on both ends of the field. The defensive trio of Allie McCabe, Ali Amari, and Reese Ruegamer made an immediate impact, helping Ithaca hold Elmira without a single shot attempt. The Bombers outshot the Soaring Eagles 40–0, with midfielder Kaelyn Fernandez leading the offensive charge with five shots and a goal. Elmira goalkeeper Sarah Cantrell was a standout performer, finishing with 17 saves to keep her team in the game.

Ithaca broke through in the 23rd minute after sustaining pressure around the net. Cantrell made a close-range save on a shot by junior midfielder Alyssa Andracki, but the Bombers kept the attack alive. After nearly 45 seconds of continued pressure, Ava Detorie set up Allie McCabe for the opening goal as the senior defender scored her fifth career goal.

The Bombers nearly doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Ali Amari found space on the left side and forced another diving save from Cantrell. Despite several chances, Ithaca entered halftime with a narrow 1–0 lead.

Cantrell continued her strong play into the second half, denying Ithaca again in the 59th minute when Margo Kasenchar's free kick sailed just over the crossbar. But the Bombers finally broke through again six minutes later. Lilyana Baldi charged toward the net and laid off a pass to Fernandez, who buried her ninth career goal to make it 2–0.

Ithaca had another close call in the 78th minute when Mia Medearis and Julia D'Anza both missed high, with Medearis's shot bouncing off the crossbar. Despite the missed opportunities, the Bombers' defense remained dominant, preventing Elmira from registering a single shot and securing the shutout. Sophomore picked up the win in net for IC playing all 90 minutes in her first collegiate start.

Ithaca returns to action this Sunday at noon, hosting Heidelberg University at Carp Wood Field. The Student Princes opened the season with a draw at SUNY Geneseo. The Bombers begin their Liberty League title defense on September 27 with a road matchup against Vassar College.
