Baseball Splits Liberty League Regular Season Finale at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. The Ithaca College Baseball team wrapped up its Liberty League regular season schedule on Sunday with a doubleheader at Hobart as the Bombers split the afternoon with the Statesmen. IC won the opener, 12-9, but fell in the nightcap, 13-3, in eight innings. Ithaca is now 22-12 on the season and finishes its Liberty League slate with a 14-5 mark.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 12, Hobart 9

Hobart jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Ethan Murley, but the Statesmen would be held scoreless until the fifth inning, which allowed the Bombers to knot things up in the fourth as Tyler Pugliese stroked an RBI double to get IC on the board and then Riley Brawdy followed with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Statesmen would then take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Hobart loaded the bases without an out being recorded, which forced IC to make a pitching change. Hobart's next two batters drove in runs with a hit by pitch and single and then a bases loaded walk made it 5-2. With two outs, a groundball should have ended the inning, but a Statesmen beat out a force to extend the lead to 6-2.

Ithaca immediately got those runs back in the top of the sixth as Pugliese led things off with a walk, Ryan Laubscher then singled to right field and Colin Dunn drove in Pugliese with a base hit for a 6-3 difference. Andrew McDermott followed with a double to left center to score Laubscher and Dunn, and Matt Curtis capped of the inning with an RBI single to bring in McDermott to tie the game at 6-6.

Hobart would regain the lead and took a 9-7 advantage into the top of the ninth inning, but the wheels fell off for the Statesmen as the Bombers plated five runs on just one hit to flip a two-run deficit into a three-run lead at 12-9.

A hit by pitch and three straight walks led to the first run of the inning as Laubscher scored on a free pass to McDermott. Collin Feeney then doubled home Dunn and Brawdy to give the Bombers a 10-9 lead. An RBI groundout by Curtis brought in another run and a dropped fly ball allowed the final run to score for IC.

Dan Kellachan picked up the save with a scoreless ninth with one strikeout. Jack Colyer earned the win for his sixth victory of the season in an inning of relief.

GAME TWO: Hobart 13, Ithaca 3 (8 Innings)

The nightcap was close through six innings as Hobart held a slim 3-2 lead, but the Statesmen plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh and seven more in the bottom of the eight to win by the 10-run rule, 13-3.

The Bombers scored two in the top of the fifth as McDermott walked and Feeney doubled in McDermott. Curtis followed with a sac fly to score Feeney to make the score 3-2.

Ithaca scored once more in the top of the eighth on an RBI base hit from Brawdy that pushed home Nate Rodriguez.

The game got away from the Bombers in the eighth as the IC pitching staff walked eight batters, which directly led to four runs crossing the plate. Hobart's lone hit of the inning drove in two runs to end the game at 13-3.

Ithaca concludes its regular season at home against No. 12 Brockport on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m.
