SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – It was a disappointing end to the regular season for the Ithaca College men's lacrosse team as they failed to clinch a home playoff game after suffering a 15-10 defeat at Skidmore on Saturday. The Bombers finished the regular season with a 9-8 record while going 3-4 in conference play and clinched the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship tournament.
Despite the loss, Ithaca had the advantage in the first quarter. Ryan Connolly scored the first goal of the game for Skidmore, but Ithaca tallied the next two with
Ethan Adrid and
Graham Brady finding twine, which provided the Bombers with a one-goal cushion heading into the second stanza.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Both goalies made some spectacular saves despite some incredible looks from both offenses. Skidmore threw the first punch with Caleb Lawson, Mike Aiello and Ryan Connolly scoring the first three of the quarter to put the Thoroughbreds up 4-2 midway through the period.
Tim Rogers and
Kyle Proctor evened things up for the Bombers 4-4 but after the ensuing faceoff, Mike Aiello capped off his excellent first half to give Skidmore the one-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Skidmore came out soaring in the third quarter, scoring the next four and just when it seemed like the Bombers were going to cave they scored three of their own including a buzzer beater of an endline play where
Kyle Proctor ripped a pass with .6 seconds remaining and
Kyle Savery miraculously put it home to bring the Bombers within two.
Skidmore went on a five-goal run in the 4th quarter, and Ithaca had no answers. The Bombers were sloppy on offense and Skidmore's attack proved to be too strong. The Proctor brothers each had four points, and despite allowing 15 goals,
Andrew Minard was magnificent, making a whopping 18 saves.
The Bombers have a chance for redemption as they will head back to Saratoga to take on this same team on the same field in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, with the time still TBA.
