ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Ithaca College baseball team secured the Liberty League series win against the University of Rochester with a 10-9 victory in 10 innings on Friday at Rochester. IC improves to 19-11 overall this season and remains atop the West standings, as well as the best overall record in Liberty League play.
Ithaca jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first after
Matt Curtis drove in
Ethan McDonough with a double after McDonough reached on a double of his own. In the top of the second, Ithaca extended their lead after
Sheldon Jay Walker III walked and was driven in by a
Ryan Laubscher double. In the top of the fourth, the Bombers tacked on another run via a
Lucas Orlovitz solo home run.
Rochester broke the seal offensively when they were able to scrape across two runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 3-2 game in favor of Ithaca. The Bombers responded in the top of the fifth after Orlovitz drove a double down the left field line which scored
Logan Scully from second base after he reached via hit by pitch.
Rochester answered quickly with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth which kept the game as a one run advantage in favor of Ithaca. Ithaca jumped on the Yellowjackets in the top half of the sixth after
Ethan Fantel doubled with one out and was then brought home by a Curtis single with a throwing error on the second baseman. Ithaca extended their lead after
Tyler Pugliese hit a two-out single which scored
Collin Feeney, who doubled earlier in the inning, and Curtis. After the top of the sixth the Bombers held a 7-3 lead.
As they did all game, the Yellowjackets were able to answer in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-run home run, inching back to a two-run deficit. The Bombers were able to put another two runs on the board in the top of the seventh and the top of the eighth via an
Andrew McDermott solo home run and a
Logan Scully solo home run.
After a scoreless top half of the ninth, Ithaca held a 9-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Rochester stormed back in the ninth, scoring four runs of their own and pushing the game into extra innings.
The tie was broken by the Bombers in the top of the tenth with a
Ryan Laubscher double that scored pinch-runner
Zack Sperger. The Bombers were able to nail the door shut in the bottom of the tenth and secure the series win.
Jack Picozzi started for the Bombers on the bump and threw 6.0 innings, surrendering five total runs, four being earned, on nine hits and picking up five strikeouts.
Jack Colyer entered in relief where he tossed 3.0 innings giving up four runs on four hits and striking out three.
Sean Kelly picked up his third save of the year after he pitched the 10th inning and allowed one hit and no runs.
Ithaca takes on Cortland at home this Tuesday in a midweek matchup.
