Baseball Sweeps RPI on Sunday

TROY N.Y. The Ithaca College baseball team swept RPI in their Liberty League doubleheader, 2-1 and 10-2, on Sunday to improve to 15-10 on the season and 8-3 in the Liberty League.

Game One: Ithaca 2, RPI 1

The Bombers got off to a quick start in the top of the first when Andrew McDermott hit single then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Camden Laney stroked an RBI double to drive in the first run making the score 1-0.

Collin Feeney scored the go-ahead run in the seventh when he walked then stole second, stole third, and advanced to home on a throwing error by the catcher to put IC back ahead, 2-1. Feeney would then play a crucial role defensively in the bottom on the ninth by taking away the potential game-tying and game-winning hits.

Jack Picozzi was a force on the mound only giving up one run in 6.0 innings while striking out seven batters in a no-decision. Sean Kelly entered the game in the seventh and threw three no hit shutout innings with four strikeouts to help secure the win for the Bombers.

Game Two: Ithaca 10, RPI 2

The Bombers got off to a hot start in game two, putting up one run in the first inning again as McDermott started the game off with a walk and Feeney hit a single down the left field line. Both moved up on a wild pitch and then Camden Laney grounded out to second, which brought home McDermott.

RPI would answer in the bottom of the first with a run of its own on three hits.

Ithaca would score their second run in the top of the second inning as Sheldon Jay Walker III singled to lead the inning off. Walker would steal second and later scored as Ryan Laubscher singled through the right side to make it 2-1.

The game would go quiet until the top of the fourth as the Bombers loaded the bases on three straight walks by Riley Brawdy, McDermott and Colin Dunn. Laney drove home another run on a base hit to center, but all runners would score as a misplayed ball cleared the bases to extend IC's lead to 6-1.

The Bombers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth when Ethan Fantel and Walker reached on walks. Tyler Pugliese brought in both runners with a triple off the right field fence to extend the lead to 8-1.

The difference grew to 9-1 in the seventh as Brawdy drove in Walker with a single and then 10th run of the game crossed in the ninth as the bases were once again loaded for an RBI fielder's choice from Brawdy that plated Walker.

RPI would score one in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Bombers would win 10-2.

Colin Leyner earned the win in 5.0 innings pitched as he allowed one run on five hits with one strikeout. Reed Bailey tossed a hitless inning of relief in the sixth and Jake Remian struck out two batters in 2.0 innings. Cooper Albert tossed the ninth inning.

Ithaca plays a doubleheader at Skidmore tomorrow at 12:30 and 3 p.m.
