Baseball Takes Doubleheader at USMMA

Kings Point N.Y. The Ithaca College baseball team swept their doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday with the first game being 7-2 and the second game being 13-10. Ithaca is now 4-2 on the season.

Game one Ithaca 7, USMMA 2 (7 innings)

The first two innings were quiet, and both Jack Picozzi and Ryan Felton didn't allow a hit. Picozzi struck out four in the first two innings.

In the top of the third, Connor Pedersen got the Bombers on the board with his first home run of the year, but the Bombers weren't done yet, as Owen Callahan followed with a single, Collin Feeney walked, and an Ethan McDonough single loaded the bases. Camden Laney hit into a fielder's choice and Callahan was thrown out at the plate, but Matt Curtis lifted a sac fly to bring in Feeney to make the score 2-0.

In the bottom half of the inning Picozzi would continue his solid start, striking out two more.

The Bombers rode their momentum into the top of the fourth when Ryan Laubscher reached on an error and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. He would then advance to third on a wild pitch before he was driven in by a Pedersen double to make the score 3-0.

Picozzi struck out two more in the bottom of the fourth bringing his strikeout total to eight.

The Bombers kept rolling in the top of the fifth as McDonough started the inning off with a walk but was thrown out at third on a ball Laney hit down the left field line. Colin Dunn would come in to pinch run for Laney and immediately stole second base, then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch making the score 4-0. Curtis would double to left-center and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches to extend the lead to 5-0.

Feeney got the sixth inning started with a walk and moved up to second on a balk. Sheldon Walker pinch hit and walked to set up a double steal, putting runners on second and third with one out. An error allowed both runners to score for a 7-0 IC advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Picozzi struck out two more to bring his total to 11 on the day, but USMMA finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Picozzi would throw a complete game, striking out 12 and only surrendering five hits and two runs.

GAME TWO: Ithaca 13, USMMA 10 (9 Innings)

Danny Drotos got the nod on the bump for game two and struggled in the bottom of the first, giving up a double and a hit by pitch that allowed a sac fly to bring a run for USMMA making the score 1-0.

But, in the top of the second Ithaca struck back. Ryan Laubscher started it off with a single up the middle. Logan Scully doubled to left field to score Laubscher and tie the game.

In the top of the third, the Bombers exploded for six runs. Pedersen would get it started with a single and Feeney reached on a hit by pitch. They would pull of a double steal and Pedersen scored on a passed ball to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead. McDonough then singled and stole to put two runners in scoring position and then Laney singled into center field scoring Feeney to make it 3-1. Curtis hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring McDonough home, extending the lead to 4-1. Laubscher then belted a two-run home run to right center for a 6-1 advantage. Riley Brawdy capped off the inning with an RBI triple to plate Scully for a 7-1 difference.

The Bomber bats would stay hot in the top of the fourth. McDonough singled up the middle and Laney smacked a two-run homer to right center for a 9-1 lead.

Jack Colyer entered in relief in the fifth and hit the first batter he faced, who would later come around to score on a single making it 9-2. Two more runs would cross to bring the Mariners to within a 9-4 score.

The Bombers would get a run back in the top of the sixth as Feeney walked and Ethan Fantel doubled to push the lead to 10-4.

Sean Kelly entered in the bottom of the sixth and allowed two runs for a 10-6 game.

The Bombers would pick it back up in the top of the eighth, starting out with Colin Dunn laying down a bunt single then stealing second base. Fantel would draw a walk then the Bombers would double steal putting runners on second and third with no one out and Matt Curtis would draw a walk to load the bases. Walker would hit an RBI single to left field to score Dunn and extend the lead to 11-6. Laubscher would ground into a double play but that would bring in Fantel to make the score 12-6. Scully would reach on an error and that would bring in Curtis making the lead 13-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, Luke Zelinko would come in to pitch in place of Murley. USMMA would immediately get those three runs back on three hits and a wild pitch.

In the top of the ninth the Bombers, would go down in order and turn the ball over to John Griffin to try and close it out. Griffin would strike out the first batter he faced but hit the next two batters then give up a single to load the bases with one out. The Bombers would get an out on a fielder's choice but that would bring a run in making the score 13-10.

The Bombers head down to Lexington, South Carolina next week for their spring break trip and will face Arcadia on March 9th.
