CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team traveled to the North Country on Friday evening to face St. Lawrence University. Trailing by one at halftime, the Bombers used a dominant fourth quarter to outscore St. Lawrence by 16 points, securing a 77-65 victory. With this win, Ithaca has now won 12 consecutive games, improving to 15-7 overall and 14-1 in the Liberty League.
The Bombers got off to a good start, building a 26-20 lead after the first quarter, with
Tori Drevna knocking down a pair of shots from downtown and
Anya Watkins chipping in six points. However, Ithaca went cold in the second quarter, being outscored 16-9, and entered the halftime break trailing by one point (36-35).
Watkins opened the second half scoring with a strong move in the paint for an easy layup. The teams traded baskets, with St. Lawrence going up 46-41 before the Bombers began chipping away in the final five-plus minutes of the period. Watkins scored another layup, followed by a fast break bucket from
Elizabeth Majka.
Madison Gill made it 52-50 with IC trailing, converting a tough bucket assisted by
Grace McNamara. The Saints Nicole Jeffrey hit a jumper in the paint, giving St. Lawrence a 54-50 lead entering the final 10 minutes.
Ithaca started the fourth quarter strong with a 7-1 run, extending to a 12-3 spurt, highlighted by a Gill 3-pointer that put the Bombers ahead 62-57. The Bombers solid defense led to effective offensive possessions, including an
Elizabeth Majka layup assisted by
June Dickson, making it 66-57. After a St. Lawrence timeout midway through the period, the Saints cut the deficit to eight with a Caelan McHarney 3-pointer (68-60). However, Ithaca extended their lead to double digits for the remaining 4:20. The Bombers shot an impressive 66.6% from the field in the final 10 minutes, while holding the Saints to just 3-of-18 shooting.
Anya Watkins finished with a season-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Zoraida Icabalceta and Majka also scored in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Next up, Ithaca College remains on the road to take on Clarkson University at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The game time has been moved up due to impending winter weather in the area.
