TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team traveled to Troy on Saturday afternoon for a Liberty League matchup against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Bombers entered the contest seeking their first conference win of the season, holding a 0-2-1 record in league play.
RPI opened the scoring just three minutes into the match, as Matt Schlotterbeck found the back of the net with a low shot to the left corner past Ithaca goalkeeper
Bryson Shaull. Moments later,
Liam Breslin delivered a dangerous cross into the box, but it narrowly missed connecting with a Bomber attacker.
Despite the early deficit, Ithaca maintained a strong defensive presence and generated several offensive chances.
Drew Warren fired a shot from the right side that was handled by the RPI keeper, and Shaull responded with a pair of key saves off RPI set pieces midway through the half.
Emmett Enriquez nearly equalized with a free kick from outside the box, followed by another threatening attempt from Warren, who led the Bombers with five shots—four of which were on target.
Ithaca continued to apply pressure late in the half, including a header off a cross that struck the post and bounced out of the attacking zone.
Trevor Barrett made a crucial sliding tackle to keep the ball in Ithaca's offensive third as the half wound down. Despite outshooting the Engineers 9–7 (with six shots on goal), the Bombers trailed 1–0 at the break.
The second half opened with end-to-end action, and Ithaca capitalized in the 55th minute. Off a corner kick,
Colin Adams, making his return from injury, scored the equalizer to bring the Bombers level at 1–1. Warren continued to be active in the attack, sending a pair of shots just high and wide as Ithaca searched for the go-ahead goal.
With 15 minutes remaining, the match remained tied until RPI's Kedy Nana broke through in the 77th minute to reclaim the lead for the Engineers. Ithaca had one final opportunity in the 85th minute off a corner, but Breslin's shot drifted just wide of the frame.
The Bombers ultimately fell 2–1 and will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 15, when they travel to Canton, N.Y., to face St. Lawrence University. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
