ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball picked up another Liberty League victory inside Ben Light Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon as the Bombers defeated St. Lawrence, 64-46. Ithaca is now 9-5 on the season and 6-1 in the Liberty League.
Aidan Holmes scored the first bucket at the 18:44 mark of the half on a wing 3-pointer and then stole a pass and found
Logan Wendell for a transition layup to make it 5-0 in a matter of four seconds.
After four straight points from St. Lawrence, Holmes drew a foul on a 3-pointer and converted all three attempts for an 8-4 advantage. IC's lead grew to 13-4 on a layup from
Jaylon O'Neal and a fast break three from Holmes to force SLU to call its second timeout of the half with more than 14 minutes to play.
Out of the timeout, O'Neal scored on a fast break off a steal from
Evan Cabral and the lead went to 15-4 and then
Chris Leysath got on the board for a 17-4 spread with 13 minutes remaining. The Saints ended IC's 14-0 run with a layup with just under 12 minutes left.
The Saints closed their deficit to 19-12 on a corner three with just over nine minutes to go, but Cabral ended that spurt on a steal and breakaway layup less than 30 seconds later to make it 21-12.
IC regained a double-digit lead on a 3-pointer by O'Neal for a 29-17 spread with 3:30 remaining. O'Neal put two more on the board with a pair of makes at the line at the two-minute mark.
Ithaca would take a 33-19 lead into the locker room as the Bombers held St. Lawrence to just 8-for-27 (29.6%) shooting from the floor and turned eight turnovers into 13 points. For the second straight game, O'Neal led IC in scoring during the first half as he notched 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Bombers reached a 20-point spread at 41-21 after 3-pointers from
Logan Wendell and Holmes. IC established its largest lead of the contest, at that time, on another three from Wendell to make it 47-26 with just over 14 minutes left in the game.
St. Lawrence pulled to within 16 points on two different occasions over the next four minutes, but the Bombers pushed the cushion back out to 21 at 54-33 on a 3-point play by
Alex Penders midway through the half. After a technical foul on St. Lawrence, the Bombers extended their lead to 58-33 following a 3-pointer from Cabral and IC would cruise from there to the 64-46 win.
Ithaca heads to Skidmore and RPI next weekend.
