NEWBURGH, N.Y.— After a gritty and hard-fought tie against York College, where neither team managed to score, the Ithaca women's soccer team was due for an offensive outburst. On a dreary Saturday afternoon, they delivered with a dominant 4-0 win over Mount Saint Mary College. This victory propelled Ithaca to a 2-0-1 start for their 2024 campaign, while the Mount Saint Mary Knights fell to 1-3 on the season.
Frustrated with their prior performance against York, Ithaca came into this game with fire and energy. They were aggressive from kickoff, and their ambitious attitude was rewarded on the stat sheet. In the 18th minute, Ally Stanton opened the scoring for the Bombers, finding the back of the net off a pass from Ava Detorie to put Ithaca in front 1-0. Just six minutes later, Kaelyn Fernandez continued her scorching start to the season by scoring, making it 2-0 Ithaca before the clock reached the 25th minute.
After an aggressive defensive play by the Knights within their own 18-yard box, an overzealous defender stepped too far, awarding the Bombers a penalty kick. Allie McCabe seized the opportunity and made no mistake, finding the net to give the Bombers a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was much of the same as Ithaca cruised to victory. Within the first 10 minutes, Sarah Sinnott tallied a goal assisted by Ava Detorie, marking her second assist of the afternoon. The smothering Ithaca defense allowed the Knights no offensive opportunities, and Ithaca finished the game in dominant fashion, securing a 4-0 win.
Ithaca had four different goal scorers, with Ava Detorie being the primary assister on two of them. Grace Hickey stopped the only shot that came her way, recording her 14th career shutout and second of the season.
Ithaca will return home to play their highly anticipated "Cortaca" game against archrival SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, September 11, at Carp Wood Field, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
